Why a tooth comes out

The usual reasons, and the first question

The first question is always whether the tooth can be saved. When it cannot, or when saving it is not the right trade, an extraction is the straightforward answer.

Broken past repair

A crack that runs below the gum line, or too little tooth left to hold a crown.

Deep decay or infection

When the damage is too far along for a filling or crown to hold, and a root canal is not the better choice.

Loose from gum disease

When the bone around a tooth has been lost and the tooth no longer holds firm.

Wisdom teeth

Checked on the X-rays and, when they need to come out, taken out here. No referral out.

The visit

Numbed first, explained first

It starts with an exam and X-rays. Dr. Chon explains what he sees, whether the tooth can be saved, and what the extraction will cost, in writing. The area is numbed with local anesthetic before anything starts, and nitrous oxide is available if you are anxious. Most simple extractions take well under an hour; you leave with gauze, written aftercare and a plan for what comes next.

Afterwards

The first few days, made easier

General aftercare; Dr. Chon gives you instructions for your own case. Go to an emergency room or call 911 for swelling spreading across the face or neck, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Bite on the gauze

Firm, steady pressure for the first hour lets a clot form in the socket.

Protect the clot

For the first few days, no straws, no smoking and no vigorous rinsing. A lost clot causes a painful dry socket.

Soft and cool

Soft foods on the other side, cold compresses on the cheek, and rest for the first day.

Call if it gets worse

Pain that increases after the third day, bleeding that will not stop, or fever: call the office.

What comes next

Replacing the tooth, priced plainly

A gap left open lets neighbouring teeth drift. Dr. Chon places and restores implants here, with no referral out.

Dental implant

$1,990
per implant, for candidates

The implant, abutment and crown, when Dr. Chon's exam and 3D scan confirm you're a candidate. Anything more gets an itemized written price first.

Where can I get a tooth pulled in Diamond Bar?

At In Line Dentistry on Golden Springs Drive. Dr. James Chon, DMD, does tooth extractions in-house, and for a genuine emergency he comes in on his off days, so the same day is possible. It starts with the exam and X-rays: the same $95 flat new-patient visit, or $0 out of pocket with an active PPO plan.

How much does a tooth extraction cost?

It depends on the tooth: a simple extraction and a surgical one are different work. There is no single published number, so Dr. Chon examines the tooth first and you get an itemized written price before anything starts. The exam and X-rays are the same $95 flat new-patient visit, or $0 out of pocket with an active PPO plan.

Does a tooth extraction hurt?

The area is numbed with local anesthetic first, so the extraction itself is felt as pressure rather than pain. Soreness for a few days afterwards is normal. Nitrous oxide is available for anxious patients; ask for it when you book.

Do you take out wisdom teeth?

Yes. Dr. Chon takes out wisdom teeth here, in the same office, with no referral out. He checks them on the X-rays at your exam, tells you plainly whether they need to come out, and prices the extraction in writing before it starts.

Should I save the tooth instead?

Keeping a natural tooth is usually better long-term, because a pulled tooth eventually needs replacing. Dr. Chon explains both options at the exam, including a root canal — done here when the tooth suits it, or by an endodontist he refers you to — and lets you decide.

What replaces a pulled tooth?

The usual options are a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture. A dental implant is $1,990 per implant, including the implant, abutment and crown, when Dr. Chon's exam and 3D scan confirm you are a candidate. Anything more gets an itemized written price first.
