Which one, when

Three appliances, three jobs

TMJ bite splints

Jaw pain on waking, clicking and headaches are common signs of a jaw joint or bite problem. Dr. Chon evaluates the bite and the jaw joints. When a splint makes sense, he fits a custom one and adjusts it over follow-up visits.

Sleep apnea and snoring appliances

A custom oral appliance is worn at night and holds the lower jaw slightly forward. The sleep apnea diagnosis comes from your physician or a sleep study. When an appliance is the right fit, Dr. Chon makes and fits it.

Night guards for grinding

For grinding and clenching at night, a custom night guard covers the biting surfaces of the teeth. Night guards are part of general dentistry here.

The process

Exam first, then the appliance

Visit one: Dr. Chon examines the teeth, the bite and the jaw joints, and explains what he finds. If an appliance makes sense, an impression or scan of the teeth is taken so it can be made to fit. At the fitting it is adjusted to your bite, and follow-up visits check the fit. Every cost is itemized in writing first.

The money part

No published fee, one written price

TMJ splint and sleep apnea appliance fees are not published. The cost depends on the appliance and the follow-up visits it needs, so you get an itemized written price at your exam, before anything starts. Financing is available on approved credit.

TMJ & sleep apnea questions

TMJ & sleep apnea questions, answered

Anything else? Call or text (909) 345-6155.

Does Dr. Chon diagnose sleep apnea?

No. Dr. James Chon is a general dentist. The diagnosis comes from your physician or a sleep study. When an oral appliance is the right fit, Dr. Chon makes and fits it at In Line Dentistry and checks it over follow-up visits. Bring any sleep study results to your exam.

What is an oral appliance for sleep apnea?

A custom mouthpiece worn during sleep. Most hold the lower jaw slightly forward to help keep the airway open. It is one treatment option a physician may recommend, and it does not replace CPAP for everyone. Dr. Chon makes and fits the appliance and adjusts it over follow-up visits.

What does a TMJ bite splint do?

A bite splint is a custom appliance that fits over the teeth, usually worn at night. It keeps the top and bottom teeth from grinding against each other and spreads the biting force. Dr. Chon evaluates the bite and the jaw first, explains the plan at the exam, and adjusts the splint at follow-up visits. A splint does not fix every jaw problem.

What are common signs of a TMJ problem?

Jaw pain on waking, clicking or popping, a jaw that feels tight, headaches and worn teeth are common signs. Dr. Chon checks the bite, the jaw joints and the chewing muscles at the exam and explains what he finds. When a splint is not the right fit for a case, he says so plainly.

Can a dentist make a custom mouthguard for snoring?

Yes. Dr. Chon makes custom snoring appliances at In Line Dentistry. Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, which a physician or a sleep study diagnoses, so that check comes first. A custom appliance is made from an impression or scan of the teeth and adjusted to the bite over follow-up visits.

How much does a TMJ splint or sleep apnea appliance cost?

These fees are not published, because the cost depends on the appliance and the follow-up it needs. You get an itemized written price at your exam before anything starts. New patients begin with the New Patient Special, $95 flat, or $0 with an active PPO plan. Dr. Chon sees patients on Tuesdays, 9 AM to 6 PM, and Thursdays, 10 AM to 7 PM.
