A toothache that won't let up

Tooth pain rarely settles on its own. Here is what helps in the meantime, when to get urgent help, and how to be seen at In Line Dentistry, an emergency dentist for tooth pain in Diamond Bar.

Until you can be seen

What helps in the meantime

These steps ease discomfort. They do not treat the cause, so book an exam even if the pain eases. This is general first aid, not a diagnosis.

Rinse and floss gently

Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently around the tooth. Trapped food alone can cause surprising pain.

Over-the-counter relief

An over-the-counter pain reliever, taken exactly as the label directs, can help. Never hold a tablet against the gum; it can burn the tissue.

Cold on the outside

A cold compress on the cheek, a few minutes at a time, can reduce throbbing and swelling. Never use heat on a swollen face.

Keep your head raised

Lying flat can make a throbbing tooth feel worse. An extra pillow at night can help.

When it's urgent

Signs not to wait on

Go to an emergency room or call 911 for swelling that is spreading across the face or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a high fever with facial swelling. Those can be signs of a spreading infection.

Swelling in the gum or face

A swollen gum, or a pimple-like bump near the tooth, often points to an infection that needs treatment soon.

Pain that keeps you up

A deep, throbbing ache at night, or pain that lingers after hot or cold, usually means the nerve is involved.

Pain when you bite

Sharp pain under pressure can mean a cracked tooth or a problem at the root.

A broken or knocked-out tooth

Keep any pieces, and call straight away. Time matters most for a knocked-out tooth.

Emergency care

If it's the nerve

A root canal removes the infected tissue and saves the tooth. Dr. Chon evaluates the tooth here, gets you out of pain, and treats it here when it suits the tooth or refers you to an endodontist.

Root canals

If the tooth can't be saved

Dr. Chon will explain the options for replacing it, including a dental implant: $1,990 per implant — the implant, abutment and crown — when his exam and 3D scan confirm you're a candidate. If your case needs anything more, you get an itemized written price before anything begins.

Common questions

Questions, answered

What should I do for a toothache at night?

Rinse with warm salt water, floss gently to clear anything trapped, take an over-the-counter pain reliever exactly as the label directs, and hold a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Keep your head raised when lying down. Then book an exam, because those steps ease the pain without treating the cause.

When is a toothache an emergency?

Go to an emergency room or call 911 straight away for swelling spreading across the face or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a high fever with facial swelling. A toothache with gum swelling, pain that keeps you up at night, or a broken tooth should be seen by a dentist as soon as possible.

How much is an emergency dental visit at In Line Dentistry?

An emergency visit is the same new-patient visit — $95 flat, or $0 with an active PPO plan — with no separate emergency fee. The exam and X-rays show what is causing the pain, and any treatment that follows is priced in writing before it starts.

Will a toothache go away on its own?

Sometimes the pain fades, but the cause usually does not. A tooth whose nerve has died can stop hurting while an infection continues underneath. An exam and X-ray are the only way to know.

Can I be seen the same day?

Call and describe what is happening. The team holds time for emergencies and books the first available slot. Dr. Chon treats patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the office triages by phone any day it is open.
